Umno's Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said has confirmed her resignation as the Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker.
Azalina said she hoped her resignation can spur a “reset” of the upcoming Dewan Rakyat sitting.
“With the appointment of the new prime minister and the public's loud and clear demand for multiparty cooperation, I have tendered my resignation today to vacate my seat.
"(This is) so that the government and the opposition may have more room to reset our Dewan Rakyat so that this august House can truly function as the forum for professional competition and collaboration between parties on policies and governance,” she said in a statement.
Azalina said the events of the last 17 months had led her to reflect on the defects of the parliamentary institutions and will support any reform efforts.
Her resignation follows the installation of a new government under newly-minted prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also the Umno vice president.
Azalina was among 15 Umno MPs who had withdrawn support for Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister, leading to the collapse of his 17-month old coalition government comprising Perikatan Nasional (PN), BN, PAS, GPS, PBS and independent MPs.
A total of 14 out of the 15 Umno MPs, including Azalina, returned to the coalition's fold after it was agreed that Ismail Sabri will be appointed as the new prime minister.
It is unclear if Ismail Sabri will appoint Azalina to his cabinet.
Prior to becoming the Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker, Azalina had a long experience in government.
She served as the youth and sports minister from 2004 to 2008 and later the tourism minister from 2008 to 2009.
She was also tapped as the de facto law minister from 2016 to 2018.
Ismail Sabri had said he was still considering the appointments of his new ministers.
He promised that the cabinet line-up will be ready within this week, after which they will be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
