KUALA LUMPUR: A rebate of two sen per kilowatt hour for all Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) account holders will be in effect from Jan 1,2021. Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said that the rebate will run for six months until June 30. "The government has agreed to also maintain the TNB basic tariff average at 39.45sen per kilowatt hour for 2021," he told a press conference at the Peninsular Malaysia Forestry Department here Wednesday (Dec 23). Shamsul added that the decision was made to further TNB's Second Regulatory Period (RP2) (2018-2020) under the Incentive Based Regulation mechanism until Dec 31 2021. "The government has also agreed to pass the savings to all TNB users from the drop in costs from coal and gas in the second half of the year. 'With the rebate of two sen, as many as 7.5 million domestic users will be able to enjoy a drop of between 3.6% and 9.2% in their electric bill. "Commercial users will enjoy a drop of between 4% and 5.2% whereas industrial users will see a reduction of between 4.6% and 6.1%," he said. Meanwhile, the electricity tariffs at the Kulim High Technology Park (KHTP) will remain at 35.70sen per kilowatt hour for 2021. "Following that, all non-domestic electric users at the KHTP will enjoy a reduction of 2.1sen per kilowatt hour from Jan 1 to June 30,2021. "This is expected to bring savings of between 3.83% and 3.89% to commercial users, and between 2.6% and 5.64% for industrial users at the KHTP," he said. The minister added that the government hoped that the rebate would help reduce the cost of living for people and aid businesses that were greatly affected from the Covid-19 pandemic.
