KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia snapped its strong showing over the past few days to end in the red on Thursday, on profit-taking. The retreat today was largely on account of declines in Petronas-linked stocks and telco stocks. At closing, the FBM KLCI finished 10.42 points, or 0.64% lower at 1,629.41 after moving between 1,636.73 and 1,626.23. It opened 3.10 points lower at 1,636.73 this morning. Gainers thumped losers at 759 to 435, while 446 counters were unchanged. Traded volume stood at 9.53 billion valued at RM5.43bil. Meanwhile, the ringgit was up 0.41% against the US dollar to 4.1093. The local currency was down 0.01% against the pound sterling to 5.7315 and 0.13% against the Singapore dollar to 3.0667. In today’s session, 10 of the KLCI-component stocks were traded higher, 19 counters fell while the remaining one closed unchanged. Petronas Dagangan fell 72 sen to RM19.97, pushing the index lower by 1.0962 points. Maxis shed nine sen to RM4.63, dragging the index lower by 1.079 points. Digi declined eight sen to RM3.70, nudging the index lower by 0.9532 points. Petronas Gas fell 28 sen to RM15.70, lowering the index by 0.8491. Banking stocks, which have the heaviest weightage on the index, closed mixed. Maybank added one sen to RM8.55, Public Bank rose two sen to RM4.34, CIMB shed four sen to RM4.60, Hong Leong Bank declined 12 sen to RM19.18 and RHB Bank added one sen to RM5.57. Gainers on Bursa Malaysia included Heineken, MPI, Vitrox and Kobay. Heineken jumped RM1.26 to RM26.80, MPI added 86 sen to RM36.40, Vitrox advanced 74 sen to RM14.86 and Kobay rose 39 sen to RM5.06. The weakness on the local bourse is a contrast with Asian markets. MSCI's Asia ex-Japan stock index was firmer by 1.72%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 ended up 0.6% at 29,211.64 while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index was up 478.09 points or 1.65% at 29,385.61. China’s Shanghai Composite index was up 2.36% at 3,436.83 while the CSI300 index rose 2.49% to 5,128.22. South Korea’s Kospi closed up 55.58 points, or 1.88%, to 3,013.70, posting its sharpest intraday percentage gain since Feb. 25.
